Authority The authorship of the genus was considered to be "Grube & Ørsted in Grube" by Salazar-Vallejo & Eibye-Jacobsen (2012: 1398), following Recommendation 51E of the ICZN (1999). Previously, the authorship had been considered to be only "Grube" (e.g.: Izuka, 1912; Hartman, 1959; Hartmann-Schröder, 1996; San Martín, 2003). [details]

Diagnosis Original diagnosis in Grube (1857: 186): "Corpus, pinnae, cirri, setae Syllidis generis, lobus capitalis cum segmento buccali coalitus, tori frontalibus nullis. Tentacula 3, cirri tentaculares 2, oculi 2." [details]

Etymology Not stated, unknown. The name of the genus is composed by the word of Greek origin Amblyo, meaning 'dull', 'dim', or 'blunt', and the name of the genus Syllis Lamarck, 1818. [details]

Publication date Publication date considered here as "1857", in opposition to Salazar-Vallejo & Eibye-Jacobsen (2012: 1392), who refer it as being "1858". The volume including the paper with the description of the genus has a footnote on page iii, under "Indhold" (= "Contents"), stating the following: ''De særskilte Aftryk af Afhandlingerne indtil Side 199 vare omdelte til Forfatterne inden October 1857. Det samlede Hefte færdigt til Omdeling 26de Februar 1858'' (which translates approximately as: ''The separate reprints of the dissertations until page 199 were distributed to the authors by October 1857. The total volume was completed on 26 February 1858''). The pagination of the paper is 158-186, which implies that it was already available in 1857, before the publication of the complete volume, the following year. [details]

Reproduction Pernet (1998) reports Amblyosyllis speciosa produces benthic gelatinous masses. Embryos and larvae develop within these masses until about three weeks after fertilization, after which they crawl or swim away and metamorphose.  [details]
