Authority Bakus (1966: 494) assigned Esper's Alcyonium incrustans as a senior synonym of Johnston's Halichondria incrustans. However, Esper's (1829-30) plate XV and description clearly represents a tunicate, and it originated probably from the Adriatic. No type specimen survived, nor is it reprsented in Ehler's (1870) redescriptions, so any proof that Esper had a specimen answering to the properties of Myxilla is lacking. Moreover, the record of Myxilla incrustans from the Pacific Northwest remains unconfirmed. Bakus (l.c.) privided a list of assumed (but mostly unproven) junior synonyms of 'his' Myxilla incrustans, which probably contains the true identity of the specimens he described. Further research is necessary to establish which species his material belongs to. [details]

Taxonomy Lévi's (1952) record from Senegal does not have the characteristic spination of M. incrustans tornotes (multiple small denticles), so it is very likely a different species. [details]
