These studies were conducted in and largely supported by the Allan Hancock Foundation of the University of Southern California. A grant from the National Science Foundation, no. B-11617, defrayed the cost of travel and a year's salary for the first author. Holotype specimens and a first set of representative species are deposited in the Allan Hancock Foundation; all other collections have been returned to Japan. This report is intended to serve as a manual for the study of polychaetes originating in Japan. There are keys and diagnoses for all species except the parasitic myzostomes coming from echinoderm hosts and chiefly known through the original record only. Distributional data and synonymies are complete for Japan. The classification adopted is mainly that used in Hartman (1959). Bibliographic citations are complete for the Japanese literature. A glossary of place names locates each place in reference to the main islands of Japan, as shown on the map.
