Authority The genus name Polyodontes derives from an unpublished manuscript name of Renier, introduced in synonymy by Blainville (1828: 461) under Phyllodoce, for Phyllodoce maxillosa Ranzani 1817, but since adopted by others. The Renier manuscripts are rejected publications (ICZN Opinions), and in any case no species was named so it is not possible that Polyodontes in Renier could be valid even if the works were regarded as published. Although Blainville included Polyodontes only as a synonym under his concept of Phyllodoce, the name was later adopted by Grube (1855: 83) for Cydippe gulo Rüppell [an unpublished manuscript name of Rüppell]. Polyodontes thus becomes valid under IZCN article 11.6 'Publication as a synonym'. The genus author is obviously not Renier in this circumstance (contrary to Grube's usage), but Blainville. Pettibone (1989: 98) used 'Polydontes Renieri [sic], 1828' as her headline name, and 'Polyodontes Renieri in Blainville, 1828' in her synonymy. These are not correct (see e.g., ICZN 11.6 example).
As regards Blainville's continuation of use of Phyllodoce sensu Ranzani as the genus name Blainville also wrote (p. 462, in translation) "it seems to us that the Phyllodoce of M. Ranzani presents too many differences with the other eumolpes, to be preserved in this genus. It can not be an aphrodite proper, nor a hermione, so that the genus Phyllodoce can be adopted. It is only unfortunate that this name, used by the Italian zoologist [Ranzani, 1817], has also been proposed by M. Savigny [actually Lamarck] for another genus. However, according to our rule, it must be preserved, and that of the French zoologist changed." This is debatable, but did not happen. [details]
