Nomenclature The Mesophyllaceae Heeg (1891) is based on the genus Mesophylla Dumortier (1822). Although validly published, Mesophylla Dumortier is illegitimate (Art. 52) because the genus originally (Dumortier 1822) included the type of Nardia S.F. Gray (1821), as noted in the Index Nominum Genericorum. The illegitimacy of Mesophylla Dumortier renders the family name Mesophyllaceae (Dumortier) Heeg illegitimate (Art. 18.3). Nevertheless, the illegitimate name Mesophyllaceae (Dumortier) Heeg (1891) remains an earlier homonym of the validly published name Mesophyllaceae Athanasiadis (2016), which is therefore a later homonym (Art. 53.1) and thus also illegitimate and to be rejected [Art. 53.1, Note 1. "A validly published earlier homonym, even if illegitimate or otherwise generally treated as a synonym, causes rejection of any later homonym that is not conserved or sanctioned (but see Art. 53.2)"]. The valid publication of the name Mesophyllaceae Heeg is, however, questioned by Athanasiadis [details]
