Status A description of Caligus africanus Oldewage & Van As, I 987 was never published. Oldewage & Van As (1988b) published an abstract on the ultrastructure of C. africanus and indirectly ("new species" or "other species") compared this species with C. infestans (Oldewage & Van As, I 988a) in which paper they referred to a new species of Caligus in press in the South African Journal of Zoology. They again referred indirectly to C. africanus in Oldewage & Van As (1989a) but reported C. africanus in the appendix of the same paper. Furthermore, they compared the structure between the frontal plates of different Caligus species in which paper they refer directly to C. africanus Oldewage & Van As, 1987 (see Oldewage & Van As, 1989b). However, all these references during 1988 and 1989 only stated that the paper on a new Caligus species was in press. No paper on a new species of Caligus was published in any of the 1988, 1989 or 1990 volumes of the South African Journal of Zoology. Furthermore, to refer to C. africanus Oldewage & Van As, 1987 is quite impossible if the description was still in press during 1988 and 1989. Therefore, C. africanus Oldewage & Van As, 1987 should be considered as species inquirenda. [details]
