Editor's comment The original species Oncaea conifera was first recorded by Giesbrecht in 1891 from the NE tropical Pacific. In 1902, Giesbrecht recorded a species similar to O. conifera from the Pacific Antarctic area (below pack ice), but noted that the species showed remarkable differences to the species he had described as O. conifera in the earlier account (1891). In 1977, Heron described a new species, Oncaea antarctica, from the Pacific Antarctic area and - based on Giesbrecht´s figures provided in 1902 - she synonymised his "conifera-type" species with O. antarctica. [details]
