Type species Two previously described Aonides species, 'fulgens' and 'gracilis' were included by Mesnil in new genus Levinsenia, but no type was designated then or later. Type species decreed to be Aonides gracilis Tauber, 1879 by ICZN Opinion 1139 [details]

Taxonomy Mesnil (1897: 93) in a heading names Levinsenia for Aonides sensu of Tauber and of Levinsen, and states it is a genus for Aonides fulgens and Aonides gracilis. Here in the text he does not use these species names as combinations in Levinsenia. However, he does use the new combinations Levinsenia fulgens and Levinsenia gracilis in the figure captions on page 99. Thus Mesnil (1897) is the first usage of these combinations, and not Mesnil & Caullery (1898: 136–138) where L. gracilis is again figured. [details]

Etymology Not stated but obviously named for G. M. R. (Georg Marius Reinald) Levinsen (1850-1914) who had described Aonides fulgens in 1884 (now Paraonis fulgens). Aonides gracilis Tauber was also included, and later was decreed (ICZN) the type species. [details]

Grammatical gender Although named after a man (Georg Marius Reinald Levinsen) Levinsenia is feminine because Mesnil did not specify gender, nor indicate he knew Levinsen was a man, combined with that the genus name ends in an -a (decreed by Art.30.2.4). In ICZN Opinion 1139 of 1979 it is also stated that Levinsenia is feminine (as is Paraonis). [details]
