Type species As noted under Syllis (Langerhansia) the Hartman catalogue (1959:210) lists "Langerhansia sexoculata (Ehlers, 1864)" as type species (her genotype) of Langerhansia, but this is not correct as Syllis sexoculata was not included by Czerniavsky in his Syllis (Langerhansia) subgenus. [details]

Taxonomy The original name is Syllis (Langerhansia) as a subgenus of Syllis. Czerniavsky (1881) is quite clear about this subgenus status for Langerhansia, although he writes the subsequent species names as Langerhansia (Syllis) species-name, apparently intending only to indicate Syllis was the genus. It is not unusual for authors of the time to declare a subgenus, but not use the required style of today, in which the subgenus must be in parenthesis after the genus. This maverick presentation style of Czerniavsky has caused some misinterpretation of his Langerhansia names, including in the Hartman catalogue (page 210). Syllis cannot ever be a subgenus of Langerhansia, including in 1881.  [details]
