Nomenclature As Lumbriconereis is a mistaken junior spelling variant, not an intentional new genus, taxon authors names should not be placed in parenthesis when using the correct 'Lumbrineris' spelling of Blainville. As the variant is associated with Grube, and has been so widely used as the 'correct' spelling for new taxa, he is given authorship here, although Lumbriconereis is not a distinct genus as such. Grube stated he was assigning his taxa to Lumbrineris Blainville, but for unknown reasons used an alternate 'improved' spelling. The variants Lumbrinereis and Lumbriconereis are spelling changes rather than different genera. This is accepted practice for genus Lumbrineris; see for example Carrera-Parra (2001: 600). The Hartman catalogue (1959: 327) treated Lumbriconereis as a separate genus authored by Grube, although referred to Lumbrineris, but strictly this is not correct according to Grube himself, who willfully changed the spelling [details]

Fauvel (1923:429) also used it in the Faune de France monograph. Fauvel (1923) inexplicably records "Lumbrineris Aud.-Edw" as its synonym, although Audouin & Milne Edwards (1833) themselves had stated Lumbrineris was from Blainville. They wrote: "M. de Blainville a établi ce genre pour recevoir quelques Annélides qui, par la forme générale de leur corps, se rapprochent des Lysidices et des Lombrics." [details]
