Remark The Challenger record of stat. 135 (off Tristan da Cunha) was given with a ? mark. The locality of Lamarck's specimen is unknown but assumed to be Australian. Ridley & Dendy (1887:48) were unsure also of the conspecificity with Lamarck's type. Two varieties of Spongia licheniformis which are incoroprated in MNHN (cf. Topsent, 1931) were assigned to Aplysina and Ircinia [details]
