Diagnosis Orbiniinae with pointed prostomium, abdominal branchiae and all thoracic setae crenulated capillaries. Twelve thoracic segments; transition from thorax to abdomen abrupt. Abdominal notopodia with crenulated capillaries and furcate setae; abdominal neuropodia with crenulated capillaries and acicular spines. Grammatical gender Although named after Cyril Berkeley, a male, Berkeleyia is feminine because its author treated it as feminine (profunda rather than profundus) and also 'a' genus endings are feminine unless the author states otherwise. [details]
Type designation Type designation by monotypy. Article 68.2.1 of ICZN (1999) states that the expressions "gen. n., sp. n.", "new genus and species", or an equivalent, are deemed to be an original designation if no other type species was explicitly designated, but only if applied before 1931 to only one of two or more new nominal species originally included in a new nominal genus or subgenus. In the present case it is applied in 1971, and so must it be considered a type designation by monotypy. [details]
