Habitat In mixed sediments (muddy sand, silty sand, sand, pebbles, shells, gravel).  [details]

Neotype Dorsey & Phillips (1987) searched unsuccessfully for the holotype of Syllis (Ehlersia) heterochaeta at the collections of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP). As the type species was considered to be missing at the ANSP (Dr. Arthur E. Bogan, ANSP pers. comm. in Dorsey & Phillips, 1987) the authors decided to designate as a neotype a second specimen donated to the ANSP by Moore in 1916, to replace the missing holotype. This specimen had been collected on the same cruise as the type, but in Central California off Point Pinos, Monterey Bay, and fully agreed with the original description. However, and as stated by Moore (1909: 321), 'Types of new species are to be deposited in the National Museum, and sets of cotypes and duplicates, as far as possible, also in the coöperating Universities and this Academy [ANSP]". This way, the holotype of Syllis (Ehlersia) heterochaeta still existed, but at the collections of the USNM, where it was originally deposited by Moore, with the reference number USNM 17400. This finding had been first published by Loi (1980: 129), and later by Licher (1999: 262-264, 312), for which reason, and according to Article 75.8 of the ICZN, the rediscovered type USNM 17400 becomes again the name-bearing type of the species, while the neotype is set aside. Moreover, according to Licher (1999: 264) the neotype designated by Dorsey & Phillips (1987) is not identical with S. heterochaeta.  [details]
