From the Lithographic Limestone of Nusplingen seven species of echinoids are described: Plegiocidaris crucifera, Rhabdocidaris boehmi, Paracidaris florigemma, Nenoticidaris histricoides, Polycidaris nusplingensis n. sp., Diplopodia subangularis, and Stomechinus perlatus. Six of them are obviously allochthonous, coming from environments in the neighbourhood of the lithographic limestone deposit, whereas one species is surely autochthonous. The latter is very frequent on a single bedding plane (r-strategist) and represents a new species, Polycidaris nusplingensis n. sp. Currently, this species is only known from the Nusplingen Lithographic Limestone. P. nusplingensis n. sp. is functionally adapted to live under dysaerobic conditions. The other species are also interpreted palaeoecologically, based on comparisons with functional characters of modern taxa.
