Status Despite having been cited as if it was established by Say (1827) and thus representing a junior homonym of Echinus...
Status Despite having been cited as if it was established by Say (1827) and thus representing a junior homonym of Echinus granularis de Lamarck, 1816 [accepted as Sphaerechinus granularis (de Lamarck, 1816)], this actually is incorrect. Say (1827: p. 225) referred his material tentatively to Lamarck's species. This clearly is incorrect, because a) of the green spines of Say's specimens and b) the locality where his material was collected (near Cape Elizabeth, coast of Maine). S. granularis has purple or white spines and does not occur on the US coast. [details]
