A tubeworm, Diopatra gallardoi n. sp., is newly described from the Benguela ecosystem off Namibia. The new Diopatra species is a member of the D. neapolitana group, characterised by the possession of long ceratophores with many rings and a “ventral lobe” on anterior parapodia. Diopatra gallardoi n. sp. most closely resembles D. monroviensis in its brown pigmentation and very fine plumose branchiae but can be distinguished by the pseudocompound hooks of the modified parapodia which are bidentate in D. gallardoi n. sp. and uni- to bidentate in D. monroviensis, and the pectinate chaetae which have three times as many teeth in the former as in the latter. In one of the samples, Diopatra was collected together with Thioploca sp., filamentous sulfur bacteria of the family Beggiatoaceae, representing the first record of a Diopatra species in this environment.
