Metaxypsamma uebelackerae, a new interstitial polychaete genus and species of the family Sigalionidae, is described from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Metaxypsamma uebelackerae differs from other known sigalionids in lacking notopodia and elytra, but these represent neotenic features coincident with an adaptation to an interstitial habitat. The similarities in the structure of the piercing-type jaws and associated venom glands of the Sigalionidae, Polynoidae, Polyodontidae, Pholoididae, and Pisionidae are discussed, and these are compared with two other scale-worm families, Eulepethidae and Aphroditidae, both of which lack piercing-type jaws and venom glands.
