Taxonomy Di Domenico et al (2014) split the genus on morphology and molecules and habitat, with members of the former ‘‘krusadensis’’ group inhabiting sheltered sandy habitats, and transferred to Pharyngocirrus, and members of the ‘‘papillocercus’’ group specialized to exposed sandy beaches, and remaining in Saccocirrus. While the authors emphasise the pharynx in Pharyngocirrus diagnosis ("Ventral muscular pharynx present."), they are silent on the state of the pharynx of Saccocirrus in its diagnosis. However, elsewhere (p. 215) they are emphatic it is not muscular, thus: "the most striking morphological difference between ‘‘papillocercus’’ and ‘‘krusadensis’’ clade is the lack of a ventral pharyngeal bulbus muscle in the ‘‘papillocercus’’ [clade]" [details]
