Type designation Pettibone (1970) designated Thalenessa digitata Mclntosh, 1885, as type species of Euthalenessa. At first examination this is an action of uncertain validity as Darboux did not name any species in his genus. He creates a name, Euthalenessa for McIntosh's concept of Baird's Thalenessa, and he calls the new genus name a 'nomen mutatum', which is not a concept allowed in zoological nomenclature. If we simply treat Euthalenessa as a proposed new genus the situation is clearer. McIntosh mentions three species from the Challenger Expedition under the genus Thalenessa, Baird, char, emend.: T. digitata, T. fimbriata, and T. oculata. Under ICZN article 12.2.5 for names published prior to 1931 the bibliographic reference in Darboux to McIntosh's Thalenessa of 1885 is sufficient to indicate these three species were intended to be included in Euthalenessa of Darboux, although Darboux never included the names in his own work. [details]
