Nomenclature based on the description attributed as 'Lycoris pulsatoria?' in Rathke (1837, Zur Fauna der Krym, p.412). Rathke (p.415) indicates his species best fits Savigny's L pulsatoria. Quatrefages was reassigning this description to a new name, Nereis falsa. Quatrefages separately recognised and used N. pulsatoria [details]

Synonymy The status of Nereis falsa is not certain (Salazar-Vallejo et al. 2017). Bobretzky (1881) treated it as a synonym of Hediste diversicolor, Vieitez et al (2004) treated it as a synonym of Nereis splendida Grube, 1840 and Gravina et al (2015: 155) treated it as valid (believing N splendida to be an invalid primary homonym) [details]
