Editor's comment The diagnosis of Placostegus porosus in Mörch (1863: 418) is rather reminiscent of Spirobranchus cf. polytrema. Plate 2 fig.8 of Sowerby & Sowerby's Serpula ornata depicts an attached tube with medial keel flanked by two rows of pits, rather reminiscent of Spirobranchus polytrema! S. ornata was attributed to Placostegus by Mörch (1863: 420) [details]Editor's comment records from the Indo-West Pacific probably are a complex of species by themselves [details] Spelling See etymology remarks for Vermilia polytrema. Vermilia is feminine, Spirobranchus is masculine. Trema by itself is a neuter Greek noun, and there is some uncertainty that 'polytremus' would be the correct masculine form as an adjective.
