Diagnosis "Blakeia" [unusable homonym]: Authors: "Paraonidae with rounded or squared prostomium, as wide as long; eyes usually absent, median antenna very small, blister-like; two-four (usually three) prebranchial chaetigers, branchiae usually present; anterior part of the body, especially branchial region, wider and slightly flattened; notopodial modified chaetae absent; neuropodial modified chaetae are slightly thicker and shorter capillaries, often with slightly deviated tip, or short, robust blade-shaped hooks, always without arista or additional hairs, always non articulated; pygidium rounded, usually bilobed, with three anal cirri." [details]
Etymology Blakeia is named after James A. Blake "in recognition of his important contribution to the study of biology and taxonomy of the family Paraonidae." [details]
Grammatical gender Masculine. However, although named after James Blake, thus implicitly masculine, the authors appear to have given genus name Blakeia a feminine ending. Code article 30.2 indicates a genus ending in -a is feminine. [details]
Homonymy Blakeia Langeneck, Barbieri, Maltagliati, & Castelli, 2019 is a junior homonym to Blakeia Kiriakoff, 1967, already used in the Lepidoptera for a moth from Borneo. See Blakeia on page 39 In: S. G. Kiriakoff (1967) New genera and species of oriental Notodontidae (Lepidoptera). Tijdschrift voor entomologie 110: 37-64 https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/33960595
Grosse et al (2021) agree Blakeia is a homonym, but do not provide a replacement name. [details]
Taxonomy Langeneck et al ( 2019) tentatively assign species to a new genus, Blakeia [unusable homonym] as follows: "We propose that species belonging to the genus Aricidea and corresponding to the generic diagnosis should be assigned to Blakeia n. gen., among which [are] the two of Aricidea without prostomial antenna (López, 2008; López and Sikorski, 2017). Also the poorly known Levinsenia duodecimbranchiata Cantone, 1994 should possibly be assigned to Blakeia n. gen., and the same accounts for three species assigned to Paraonis, namely Paraonis amazonica Ribeiro, Alves, Almeida and Ruta, 2018, Paraonis dubia (Augener, 1914) and Paraonis strelzovi Hartmann-Schröder, 1980, [which are] showing discrepancies towards their genera, and with features compatible with Blakeia n. gen. (Augener, 1923; Hartmann-Schröder, 1980; Cantone, 1994; Ribeiro et al., 2018). We here refrain from providing a list of species that can be possibly assigned to Blakeia n. gen., but a thorough revision of the genus is necessary to sort out its actual diversity." [details]
