Taxonomy Linnaeus (1758) established 'Lumbricus' for the unrelated taxa, L terrestris (earthworm) and L. marinus (marine lugworm), and the name 'Lumbricus' had been used for hundreds of years previously for various worms. Lamarck (1800) established Arenicola, thus leaving Lumbricus terrestris as the sole original name in Lumbricus, and thus limiting Lumbricus to earthworms. [details]

[details]
