Nomenclature Quatrefages (1843) is said by Pettibone (1963) to have designated N. coniocephala Johnston, 1838 as type of Nerine. In fact Quatrefages simply removed the only other member of the genus, N. vulgaris (Johnston) to his Malacoceros. However, there seems little point in revisiting whether this strictly constitutes designation, as Nerine is invalid. Nerine coniocephala is also said to be a synonym of Aonis foliosa Audouin & Milne-Edwards, 1833 according to Malmgren (1867) (Aonis foliosa = Scolelepis foliosa, fide Pettibone (1963:98)) [details]
