Etymology The specific epithet paradoxus, meaning 'strange' or 'contrary to expectation' in Ancient Greek, refers probably to the strange look of the species, and to the initial doubts of the author while assigning it to a particular polychaete family: "On peut hésiter, au premier abord, à placer dans la famille des Syllidés le singulier ver dont la description va suivre. Cependant, l'existence de pieds uniramés, munis de soies articulées en serpe, l'existence d'un pharynx doublé d'une épaisse cuticule et surtout celle d'un proventricule dont la paroi renferme des rangées transversales de glandes, me font penser que sa place naturelle est bien celle que je lui assigne" (Claparède, 1864: 569-570). [details]
