Etymology The species is dedicated to Anders Sandøe Ørsted (= Anders Sandoe Oersted, or Anders Sandö Örsted), (b. Rudkøbing, Denmark, 21 june 1816 - d. Copenhagen, Denmark, 3 September 1872), a Danish marine biologist, zoologist, mycologist and botanist, who published several works on Polychaeta. [details]
Taxonomy Current taxon was considered as a junior synonym of Syllis cornuta Rathke, 1843 by Carus (1885: 228), Soulier (1904: 358), Augener (1912: 169-171; 1928: 718), Fauvel (1913: 40; with doubts), Wesenberg-Lund (1947: 6; 1950: 15; 1950: 46; Pettibone, 1954: 253). Licher (1999: 300) considered the taxon as a nomen dubium. [details]
Type locality Arctic Ocean, off the northern coast of Spitsbergen, far from land (geocoordinates not provided, estimated with gazetteer to be approximately lat. 80º, long. 13º): "Hab. ad oras boreales Spetsbergiae, procul a terra" (Malmgren, 1867: 45). The material was collected by the author the 1st of June of 1861. [details]
