Taxonomy The type species, Laevispinereis fujianensis, as described fits the concept of Leonnates as revised by Qiu & Qian (2000). The expanded peristomium, considered by He & Wu (1989) to be diagnostic of Laevispinereis (and similar to that in Cheilonereis), is here interpeted to be a preservation artefact. The close similarity between Laevispinereis fujianensis and Leonnates species is indicated in the only phylogenetic study to include both taxa (Santos et al. 2005). [details]
