Taxonomy Status as subgenus was instituted by Pettibone (1963), with subgenus Nerinides species lacking notched ventral lamellae. Others considered this an unstable division. Light (1978) suggested subgenus Nerinides species had sharp multidentate hooks, but it is unclear if stem Nerinides genus sensu Mesnil (based on Nerine longirostris (Quatrefages) sensu Saint-Joseph) had this characteristic. Maciolek 1987 replaced use of subgenus Nerinides with her new subgenus Parascolelepis on the basis that specimens of Scolelepis (Nerinides) cantabra, which she thought was a replacement name for Nerinides longirostris (q.v.), had the same type of hooks as S. squamata. In fact S. (N) cantabra has no special status. The matter is yet to be clarified. [details]
