Classification Izuka (1912) placed Coelobranchus in Eunicidae, in which also at the time he included Dorvilleidae genera and other Eunicida. Later the species was recognised as Iphitime doderleinii, and for a time Iphitimidae was a valid family. Iphitime Marenzeller also began in the Eunicida, and is now in Dorvilleidae [details]

Etymology Not stated but named Coelobranchus possibly because the branchiae are hollow with an internal connection to the main body [details]

Synonymy As the genus is monotypic, and the type species is a subjective synonym of Iphitime doderleinii, therefore Coelobranchus must become a junior synonym of Iphitime [details]
