Etymology The specific epithet validus is a Latin adjective meaning 'strong or 'robust', and refers to the bigger dimensions of the new Japanese species in relation with the Mediterranean Acrocirrus frontifilis (Grube, 1860): "Die viel grössere japanische Form stimmt im Wesen völlig mit der Mittelmeer-Form überein" (Marenzeller, 1879: 148).
