Etymology Authors: "The species name derives from the latin macula ( = spot), in reference to the numerous dark spots on the surface of paleae". Latin macula is a feminine noun, meaning a spot, mark, or stain. However, 'maculata' as used is an adjective (maculatus -a -um) and must agree with genus name Chrysopetalum (neuter genus), thus the species name should be 'maculatum'. The adjective is exceedingly common as a species-group name, with WoRMS reporting nearly 950 masculine 'maculatus' name variants, nearly 1200 feminine 'maculata' names, and nearly 290 neuter 'maculatum' names. There is absolutely no doubt that it is a gender-variant adjective. [details]
Spelling Compulsory gender agreement of suffix requires the adjectival species-group name 'maculata' to be corrected to be maculatum. [details]From other sources
