Homonymy Costa (1867: 55) indicates he was aware of a homonymy conflict with Quatrefages earlier name, and also indicates the two names may refer to the same species. Costa seems to be correct that Quatrefages (1850: 361) did not at first describe his species with characters that enable it to be recognised. Quatrefages (1866:376) has a text description, without figures in his second characterisation of the species. The species was large at 10-12 cm. In both of Costa's usages there is text only, without figures, and the 1867 usage adds nothing descriptive.
[This species was described by us in the first volume published in 1862 (page 84). M. Quatrefages in his recent work on the Anellides came to light in 1865 and describes with the same name the same species described by us, which he would like to track forward to him in 1850, a time when in a memory on the nervous system of the Anellidi (1) pointed to the name of Lysidice torquata, a species which mentions some peculiarities of the nervous system, but does not add any zoological character worthy of recognizing or at least glimpsing the species, nor does it accompany it with a figure that could supersede the text : so that name could later apply it to any other [worm] he liked. Therefore, the invoked precedence does not exist; and in any case there was a coincidence of the name, easy to occur when the animal to be baptized offers some very distinct character that suggests the name; The foregoing description does not belong to the French Zoologist. So the synonymy of the species in question must go this way.] [details]
