Etymology The specific epithet barbilla is a Spanish noun normally meaning 'chin' or 'tip of the chin', but is used here as the equivalent of ''barb, as on a fish'' (Blake, 1981: 949). It refers to the notopodial spines present in the posterior region of the body, which have minute barbs ('púas' or 'pinchos', in Spanish) basally directed on shaft. [details]

Type locality 3-5 km west of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico, Gulf of California, Pacific Ocean (gazetter estimate 31.32º, -113.58º), 15 m, from shell of Hexaplex nigritus (Philippi, 1845). [details]
