Etymology "The specific name [melasma] is a Greek word for "black", which refers to the black basaltic sediments in which this species occurs" (Hutchings et al., 1998: 803). [details]
Habitat In the surf zone of all basaltic beaches fully exposed to the ocean waters, not protected by a barrier reef, in the east and west coasts of Tahiti. The species lives in non-permanent mucous tubes and occurs in densities of 700-1000 m2, in fine sandy sediments in the intertidal region of the beach; the tidal range is about 50 cm. [details]
