Type locality The species was found in an aquarium with corals of the Löbbecke Museum Düsseldorf (Germany), on a colony of corals of the genus Xenia (Xeniidae, Alcyonaria), probably from Bali (Indonesia). According to article 76.1.1 of the ICZN, "if capture or collection occurred after transport by artificial means, the type locality is the place from which the name-bearing type, or its wild progenitor, began its unnatural journey". For this reason the type locality of the species should be considered as being probably Bali (Indonesia).  [details]

Taxonomy Martin et al. (2009) refer a list of species belonging to the genus Alcyonosyllis which included Syllis onkylochaeta. However, this new combination is not made in any of the cited papers (Glasby & Watson, 2001; San Martín & Nishi, 2003; Lattig & Martin, 2009). San Martín & Nishi (2003) comment the close relation of Syllis onkylochaeta with the genus Alcyonosyllis, but states that the articulated dorsal cirri and compound chaetae separates it from that genus. The species probably does not belong to Syllis, but so far it remains in the genus.  [details]
