Classification Khlebovich (1996: 119) within a record for Hediste japonica (material from southern Sakhalin, Tatar
Strait, southern Kuril Islands, Japanese, Yellow and Voetochno Chinese (Shanghai) seas) suggests Nereis sakhalinensis is "probably" a synonym of Hediste japonica. However, he doesn’t take the formal step of including Nereis sakhalinensis in the synonymy of Hediste japonica, nor examine type specimens, nor explain his reasoning, nor does he create the combination Hediste sakhalinensis. Khlebovich appears to be the only taxonomist to suggest Nereis sakhalinensis is a Hediste, but possibly he is correct. More recently Salazar-Vallejo et al (2021) in a work dealing with other matters included the combination Hediste sakhalinensis in a key to Hediste species. There is no comment that this is a new combination. As supporting evidence is not given and there are no other workers except Khlebovich (1996) that deal with the placement of Nereis sakhalinensis in Hediste the combination is not yet adopted in WoRMS pending further investigation. Nereis sakhalinensis has been for a long period placed as a Neanthes species. [details]
