Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Claparède (1868: 467): ''Corpus longitudine 45mm, latitudine 2mm,5, segmentis 65, dilute violaceum, cellulis pigmenti peritoneo insidentibus, etiam intra basilarem articulum antennarum palporumque conspicuis. Maxillæ denticulis minimis valde arcuatæ. Pedum paria quatuor anteriora festucis spinosis cætera falcatis instructa.'' [details]

Etymology The specific epithet peritonealis is a Latin adjective meaning 'peritoneal', and refers to the violaceous colour of the species being due to the presence of pigmented cells in the 'peritoneum' of the species: ''Cette Néreïde présente la particularité, rare chez les Annélides, de devoir sa coloration non à un pigment répandu dans la couche chitinogène, soit sous-cuticulaire (derme Qtrlg.), mais à des cellules pigmentaires du péritoine.''
