Nomenclature As Echinorhynchus scutatus clypeatus. Vejdovsky used the more common genus spelling of 'Echinorhynchus'. All spelling variants belong in Acanthocephala, not Polychaeta. The name originates in a passing comment of Vejdovsky (1882), "p.34 "A. Renier fand dasselbe Thier in dem adriatischen Meere und nennt es, der eigenthümlichen Gestalt nach, Echinorhynchus scutatus vel clypeatus" [A. Renier [1807] found the same animal in the Adriatic Sea, and called it, after the peculiar shape, Echinorhynchus scutatus vel clypeatus]. However, this may be a misinterpretation of the content in Renier [1807], which is also an unavailable publication (ICZN Opinion 427) for the purposes of nomenclature. [details]
