Editor's comment On usage in Annelida. Scolopendra major tubularia is an annelid. Baster (1760) presented the name as "De Scolopendra majore, tubularia" which is dubiously a Linnaean-form Latin name. It does not appear to be intended as a subspecies or variety name. Knight-Jones & Perkins included it in the synonymy of Sabella pavonina, a junior name, without comment, although probably not regarding it as an available name. They converted it to "major tubularia', dropping the 'e'. They use the wrong publication date (1759, instead of 1760). Possibly Knight-Jones & Perkins came across the name in McIntosh (1922), as earlier the Hartman catalogue (p. 567) listed the McIntosh usage (1922: 224) as "Scolopendra major tubularia" in the synonymy of Sabella penicillus. [details]

Publication date 1760. Scolopendra majore, tubularia was published in the second part of Baster's six part work (2nd part starting from page 49) which was published in 1760, not 1759. There is a title page with the date on page 49. The date of 1759 in Knight-Jones & Perkins (1998) is incorrect. [details]
