Etymology The 'platypus' species-group name refers to the shape of the prostomium, which in dorsal view resembles a platypus bill. Not stated, but since named after the vernacular name of another animal 'platypus' is perhaps best considered a noun in apposition to the feminine genus Cossura. Originally 'platypus' as in Platypus anatinus was a Greek compound from πλατύς (platus) "broad" and πούς (pous) "foot" used as a genus referring to the feet of the animal, with 'anatinus' "bird snout" referring to the mouth shape.
