Taxonomy Assignment of Dragmatyle topsenti to Eurypon is done on the basis of Hooper's (2002: 488) statement that Dragmatyle is a junior synonym of Eurypon. Burton's species is an unlikely Eurypon as it is ramose with an axial skeleton of tylostyles. The type needs to be examined for a proper evaluation of the generic status. This is especially important because Pulitzer-Finali (1983) erected the junior homonym Eurypon topsenti for a Mediterranean species, which will have to be replaced if the two are members of Eurypon.
Additional note: It needs to be determined whether Burton’s (1954) terminology of the surface spicules as “oxeote styloids” is homologous to Topsent’s (1904) “tornotes” for the type species of Dragmatyle, or refers to “styles” as Burton’s description implies. [details]
