Taxonomy Hentschel (1914) erected three varieties antarctica for three different Hymedesmia species. These are homonyms of which only one can be the senior homonym, the other two need to be renamed. Boury-Esnault & Van Beveren incorrectly assumed that varieties cannot be upgraded to species, so their action to take authorship for a species Hymedesmia antarctica based on Hymedesmia simillima var. antarctica Hentschel is invalid. Still, they assigned a holotype from Kerguelen, which needs to be compared closely with the Antarctic specimens of Hentschel to establish they are the same species. If so, then authorship would go to Hentschel (not Boury-Esnault & Van Beveren). The other two Hymedesmia varieties named antarctica by Hentschel need to be renamed. [details]
