Identification There is insufficient evidence that Spongia fibrillosa Pallas, 1766 is an Echinodictyum, although its description suggests a species similar to Echinodictyum, e.g. E. mesenterinum. No image or type is available. Esper (1794) provided an image of Pallas' S. fibrillosa and Ehlers (1870) reexamined Esper's specimen and assigned it to Pachychalina as it had spongin-envelopped spicule tracts with oxeas of 216 x 18 µm. Ehlers did not mention any acanthostyles, but it is possible he overlooked them. If the uncertainty over the identity of S. fibrillosa is to be removed a neotype needs to be assigned. [details]
