Taxonomy Ridley based his new variety of Spirastrella (now Spheciospongia) vagabunda on Carter's (1882: 352) Suberites ? sp. At a later date, Carter (1887) partly accepted Ridley's name by erecting Suberites trincomaliensis for this same material from Sri Lanka, claiming it -incorrectly-as his own. Carter's name is a junior synonym.
The status is controversial as Hooper & Wiedenmayer (1994) suggested this to be a junior synonym of S. vagabunda. This still has to be demonstrated. [details]
