Synonymy Dirrhopalum is an unjustified replacement name for Plocamia Schmidt, 1870. Ridley pointed out that an older genus name Plocamium Lamouroux was erected in 1828 for a genus of sea weeds and that thus Schmidt's name Plocamia had to be replaced. He propsed Dirrhopalum as replacement name. However, (1) Plocamia is not a homonym of Plocamium, and (2) sea weeds (Algae) and animals (Animalia) are allowed to have identical spellings as they are not governed by the same nomenclatorial ruling. There are numerous identical names between animals and plants. Thus Dirrhopalum becomes an objective junior synonym of Plocamia. Remarkably, Ridley misspelled Schmidt's type species, Plocamia gymnazusa as Dirrhopalum gymnazon. Because no explanation is offered by Ridley, this is here treated as an inadvertent subsequent misspelling, which is permanently unavailable. [details]
