Homonymy This combination is a junior primary homonym of Spongia pertusa Esper, 1794, now accepted as Hyattella pertusa. Hyatt's variety was used by Lendenfeld, 1879 (as Spongia irregularis var. pertusa, and raised to species level as Spongia pertusa by Van Soest (1978: 13). Esper's name cannot be a nomen oblitum in the sense of art. 23.9.1, as it was redescribed by Topsent in 1920. Consequently, Hyatt's name needs to be replaced. Van Soest (1978) included Spongia anclotea De Laubenfels & Storr, 1978 in the synonymy of Spongia pertusa Hyatt, 1877 and as such is the first avaialble name to replace this name. [details]
