Taxonomy Duchassaing & Michelotti's (1864) record of this species appears from their plate III fig. 3 probably a true Spongia species different from that of Pallas' or Lamarck's S. cavernosa. Since no material has survived (see Van Soest et al. 1983) we will not know for certain what they had in hand. [details]
Taxonomy Lamarck (1814) records his Spongia cavernosa from the Caribbean ('Mers d'Amérique'). His description does not confrom to Pallas' Spongia cavernosa (=Hyattella cavernosa). However, the description also does not match Topsent's redescription. [details]
