Authority The authorship of the name is enigmatic. Noreña-Jannsen & Faubel (1992) mention Örsted, 1844, others Ehrenberg, 1837. Ehrenberg himself (1837: p. 244), however, refers to Duges, 1830, as does Graff (1882, p. 285).
Duges (1830: p. 76 and following) indeed introduced the genus Dérostomes, for which he proposes the latinised name Derostoma. He divides the genus into two sections: Dérostomes and Mésostomes, the latter for which he does not provide a latinised name. Ehrenberg (1837: see above) treats both sections as genera, and latinises the name: Mesostoma.
According to Art. 10.4 of the ICZN the name of a "section" within a genus-group, even if denoted as such, is to be considered a subgenus. Hence, if the name of the "sections" of Duges can be considered to be available, then Duges, 1830 certainly is the authority.
Recomendation 11A of ICZN states that: " An unmodified vernacular word should not be used as a scientific name. Appropriate latinization is the preferred means of formation of names from vernacular words" and Art 12.3: "The mention of any of the following does not in itself constitute a description, definition, or indication: a vernacular name, locality, geological horizon, host, label, or specimen."
So the entire question turns now around the question whether "Mesostomés" is to be considered vernacular or not. As it is neologisme by Dugès (1830) it hardly can be considered vernacular, and it just needs to be latinised. From the text and actions of Ehrenberg (1837), who used the name in Latin, and Graff (1882), it is clear they neither did consider it vernacular, so we follow their view that the name Mesostoma should be attributed to Duges.
