Taxonomy Brun's premature rejection through the ICZN of the name Asterias hispida Pennant 1777 necessitated a new name for British specimens beleived by A.M. Clark to be subspecifically distinct from L. muelleri (M. Sars) of Scandinavia. [details]
Taxonomy Clark & Downey (1992) distinguish two subspecies: L. muelleri muelleri has stouter arms and longer spines and occurs from Norway to the Shetlands; L. muelleri celtica has slightly tapering arms, shorter and rougher spines, and has been found in eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland.
