Ob die Anneliden in dem Umfange, in welchem sie Cuvier gefasst hat, noch ferner als Classe bestehen, und ob sie in diesem Fall noch ferner mit den Arthropoden in seinem Kreise der Gliederthiere vereint bleiben sollen oder nicht, darüber hat sich seit einiger Zeit ein grosser Zwiespalt der Meinungen erhoben. Cuvier's Gegner entfernen sie entweder aus diesem Verbande, um sie den tiefer stehenden Würmern beizugesellen, oder stellen einen noch grösseren Kreis auf, der sowohl die Arthropoden als die Anneliden, die übrigen freilebenden und schmarotzenden Würmer, die Räderthiere, ja wohl auch die Bryozoen umschliesst. Jene zweite in die Abgrenzung der höchsten Abtheilungen des Thierreichs eingreifende Frage hier zu erörtern, würde meinen nächsten Zweck überschreiten, und kann einstweilen bei Seite gestellt werden, darüber jedoch ist gegenwärtig ein jeder, der von Anneliden handelt, eine Erklärung schuldig, ob er sie in dem Sinne von Cuvier, von Milne Edwards, Burmeister, Wiegmann oder R. Leuckart nimmt, und vor allem, ob er die Hirudineen mit ihnen verbinden oder zu den Planarieen (Dendrocoelen, Rhabdocoelen) und Trematoden hinüberführen will.
